Community Planter Boxes

This project is headed up by Beth Buck and Laurie Carson. This is one of four projects and one that truly shows our commitment to our community in a most visible way. We have 34 planter boxes around the community that are admired and enjoyed by all.

Fall 2023

A small, dedicated group of members braved the sweltering heat of early October to stain the 34 planter boxes that are placed throughout our community at participating businesses and Township properties.

Here’s a “feel good” story about our Planter Boxes:

Shirley Miller has been watering and tending the planter box at Tapping’s Landing on Lake Mazinaw for about 13 years on her daily 7 km walks along the North Mazinaw Lake Road.

She is now over 80. She can only fetch half a pail of water and often asks the nice young lads, who launch their boats, to fill the pail for her and bring it to the top of the hill where the planter box is located.

She was asked over a decade ago by a former garden club member if she would mind “keeping an eye on it” and watering it as needed. So she has done this because she enjoys seeing the beautiful flowers that thrive due to her daily attention. And she enjoys talking to the people who launch their boats. She also knows most of the year-round and seasonal residents on the road.

She is not a member of the Land O’ Lakes Garden Club because she “only grows vegetables”.

But that has now changed. At our October meeting, the club agreed that Shirley Miller be made an honorary member of the club.

Thank you Shirley for all of the time and care you have given to provide a beautiful “welcome” to all who arrive at Tapping’s Landing!
